Which Foods Stain Your Teeth?
If you’re looking to maintain a beautiful beaming smile, then there are some lifestyle factors that you need to know about. First off: avoid cigarettes and chewing tobacco at all costs. Secondly, diet plays a huge role in keeping your pearly whites white and pearly.

Some of the big culprits to avoid are sugary sweets that stick to your teeth and lead to decay, as well as intensely coloured foods and drinks that can stain teeth. Highly acidic foods and drinks can also lead to tooth enamel corrosion, which will lead to stains, cavities and other oral health issues.

The worst offenders are a combination of all of the above!

Here are some foods to avoid:

Red and White Wine

Jam-packed with chromogens and tannins, wine is known for its high acidity and penchant for staining teeth. Combine the acidity with the deep red colour of your favourite merlot and you’ve got trouble!

Coffee and Black Tea

These caffeine favourites are notorious teeth strainers due to their acidity and colour. Many studies have shown that tea is even worse than coffee!

Soft Drinks

Sugary, acidic and bubbly, cola is widely likened to battery acid in terms of its effect on teeth.

Candy and Sweets

From chewing gum to hard candies and popsicles, sweets can corrode teeth and their aggressive colouring can leave them tie died like a Grateful Dead t-shirt from the ’60s.

Colourful Sauces

The deep colours of sauces like soy and tomato sauce can deeply stain teeth. Think of this rule: If it will stain your carpet, it will stain your teeth.

Berries

Colourful, acidic and packed with sugar, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and cranberries can all corrode tooth enamel and stain teeth with their deep dark colours.

Curry Powder

An essential in Indian cuisine, curry is pungent, spicy and delicious. It’s also capable of staining teeth. Turmeric, a curry staple, has been used for generations as a dying agent for clothing, so it comes as no surprise that it can do the same to your teeth!

Specific Mouthwashes

Antibacterial mouthwashes containing cetylpyridinium or chlorhexidine chloride can leave teeth brown and discoloured. If you’re unsure of what to look for, ask our team for suggestions.
